Data Access Policies

The following are policy documents related to the use and access of data in the FaceBase repository.

FaceBase Data fits into one of two broad categories: open and controlled access.

Open access

Data in this category is available on the FaceBase website to any interested user and does not require any formal registration to browse or download our data.

Terms of Use for Open Data

FaceBase is intended to be a resource for the larger scientific community. Please help us accomplish that goal by following the "terms of use" for open access data described on this page.

Controlled access

Data in this category is available to authorized users for specific research use only after approval by the Data Access Committee (DAC).

Applying for Access to Controlled Data

Access requires submission of a Data Access Request (DAR) and signed Data Use Certification (DUC). The full process is outlined on this page .

Terms of Use for Controlled-Access Data

Terms of Use for controlled-access data are detailed in the DUC agreement.

FaceBase adheres to the Required Security and Operational Standards for NIH Controlled-Access Data Repositories as described in NOT-OD-25-159 .

Per requirements of this notice, all users of FaceBase controlled-access data must adhere to the “NIH Security Best Practices for Users of Controlled-Access Data ” and must protect this data in accordance with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) SP 800-171 “Protecting Controlled Unclassified Information in Nonfederal Information Systems and Organizations.” An authorized institutional Signing Official from the requesting institution/corporation attests to adherence with these security standards by submitting a signed Data Use Certification to accompany submission of a Data Access Request.

Secondary research use of controlled access data must be consistent with any applicable Data Use Limitation (DUL) specified for each dataset for which access is requested.
